Welcome to two new female gastroenterologists

We are excited to announce that we have two new female gastroenterologists joining us, Dr Claire Smart and Dr Patricia Kaazan.

Dr Claire Smart

Dr Claire Smart was born and raised in the UK and graduated medicine in England from the University of East Anglia in 2009. She undertook physician training across the north of England completing her MRCP(UK) in 2013 before moving to Australia in 2014 for a new adventure. She went on to commence Gastroenterology training in 2019 at Flinders Medical Centre and the Lyell McEwin Hospital completing her fellowship in luminal gastroenterology at Flinders achieving FRACP status in 2022. After a short career break she returns to clinical practice in 2023 following the birth of her first child.

She consults at Flinders Private Hospital (Bedford Park) and Tennyson Centre (Kurralta Park), and performs procedures at Flinders Private Hospital and Tennyson Centre Day Hospital.

Dr Patricia Kaazan

Dr Patricia Kaazan was born and raised in Lebanon, graduating from the Lebanese University in 2011. She started physician training there before moving to Australia in 2013 where she completed training at the Central Adelaide Local Health Network. Her gastroenterology training was undertaken at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Logan Hospital (Brisbane). She then went on to complete a two-year luminal fellowship at Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane) with special focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), intestinal failure and motility disorders. During that time she has participated in regular general and transplant liver clinics and ward service.

She has authored multiple peer-reviewed papers and is an active researcher.

Dr Kaazan is interested in improving IBD patient care with Gastrointestinal ultrasound (GiUS). She holds a graduate diploma in abdominal sonography and has completed a GiUS fellowship at the Mater Hospital (Brisbane). She is currently pursuing further training in perianal sonography.

She consults at Calvary Adelaide Hospital (Adelaide) and 480 Specialist Centre (Windsor Gardens), and performs procedures at Calvary Adelaide Hospital and Windsor Gardens Day Surgery. Dr Kaazan also performs Gastrointestinal Ultrasound at Radiology SA Dulwich.
